How to Use the HSE's Health and Safety App
The Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) mobile app was designed for small businesses and anyone new to health and safety. Its purpose is to help users understand the law, their health and safety rights, and how to protect employees. The app contains core guidance on what the law requires and the responsibilities of an employer under the Health and Safety at Work Act etc. 1974.
The app was created in partnership with The Stationery Office (TSO) and ensures that guidance is available in various formats to help achieve the HSE’s mission of preventing death, injury and ill health in Great Britain’s workplaces.
The following are the three main sections of the app and how to use them:
The Health and Safety Toolbox
This section of the app explains what the law requires and the responsibilities of the employer. It provides an overview of all potential risks to help an employer identify which areas are applicable for their organisations. Some of the topics covered in this section are electrical safety, fire safety, petrol safety, slips and trips, harmful substances and personal protective equipment. Employers can use this toolbox to search for any safety topics they need clarification on.
A Guide to Managing Risk
The second section provides a simple step-by-step guide and practical advice on how to manage risk within an organisation. It includes how to:
- Identify hazards
- Asses the risks
- Control the risks
- Record findings
Work-related Stress
The last section is a condensed version of HSE’s stress management standards approach. It includes a step-by-step guide to manage work-related stress for small organisations (up to 50 employees), medium-sized organisations (51-250 employees) and medium-sized organisations with multiple site locations.
The app can be downloaded on an Apple or Android device from either the iOS or Google Play Store.
